Buffer alternatives: Magic Marketer vs Buffer, and five others worth a look

Buffer is a good scheduler. It just doesn't create the posts - Magic Marketer is the machine that produces the assets, then publishes them.

Buffer is the scheduler most people start with, and for good reason: it is cheap, it is clean, and it does exactly one thing well. It takes posts you have already made and puts them out on time.

The reason people go looking for a Buffer alternative is almost never that the scheduling broke. It is that the queue is empty.

Buffer assumes the posts exist. If making them is the problem, a better scheduler will not fix it. (Ask us how we know.) That gap is what this page is about.

Choose Buffer if

You already have a marketing team or writer producing content, and you just need a reliable place to schedule and queue posts across platforms.

Choose Magic Marketer if

You need the content itself - finished social assets, produced fast - and then you want them published, not a calendar waiting on a blank page.

What Buffer does well

Buffer is one of the few tools in this space with a usable free plan (three channels, ten queued posts each). The paid tiers are priced per channel rather than per seat, the interface is quick to learn, and the AI Assistant will tidy up a caption you have already written. If you have a designer, a writer, or a VA producing posts, Buffer is a perfectly good place to line them up.

Where it stops

Buffer does not make anything. There is no carousel, no video, no quote card, no post copy unless you bring it. The AI Assistant rewrites text you paste in; it does not know your business, your voice, or what you said on last week's client call. So the workflow is still: sit down, think of something, write it, design it in another tool, export it, upload it, schedule it. Buffer only owns the last step.

How Magic Marketer is different

Magic Marketer starts one step earlier. You give it one source - a recording, a voice note, a transcript, a link, or a photo - and it produces finished posts in eight formats (carousels, short-form video, stories, quote cards, feed graphics, text posts, threads and long-form posts) in your voice, sized for each channel. Then it publishes them. On Autopilot it does this every week without being asked.

It also checks every draft against your brand guardrails and, if you are in a regulated industry, against compliance presets (TGA, APRA, AHPRA and others). Buffer has no equivalent, because Buffer never sees the content before you paste it in.

If you already have a content team and only need a queue, keep Buffer. It is a fraction of the price and it does that job perfectly.

Buffer pricing vs Magic Marketer pricing

ToolPlanPriceWhat you get
BufferFree$03 channels, 10 posts per channel, basic analytics
BufferEssentials$5/moUnlimited posts, hashtag manager, advanced analytics
BufferTeam$10/moUnlimited team members, approvals, permissions
Magic MarketerFree trialA$0 for 14 daysUnlimited creations and exports, no card. Publishing needs a paid plan.
Magic MarketerAutopilotA$149/moThe one paid plan. A fresh batch of posts every week, publishing to every connected channel. Team members and brands included - no extra charge for admin or another brand. No generation limits. A$99/mo for the first 100 customers, or A$990/yr (2 months free).

Buffer prices are USD list prices as published on buffer.com, checked September 2026. Magic Marketer prices are in AUD. Buffer is much cheaper if you already have content; the comparison only makes sense once you add whatever you are paying - in money or hours - to produce the posts Buffer schedules.

Other Buffer alternatives worth considering

Magic Marketer is not the right fit for everyone. These are the tools we would point you to instead, and why.

  • Later

The better choice if Instagram is your main channel and you want a visual planner. Starter from $25/mo; no free plan any more.

  • Metricool

Closest like-for-like Buffer replacement, with stronger analytics and competitor tracking. Free plan for one brand; Starter $25/mo.

  • HeyOrca

Built for agencies that need client approval links. $59 per calendar, so it gets expensive past a few clients.

  • Publer

Cheap scheduler with bulk upload and a decent free tier. Same limitation as Buffer: you supply the posts.

  • ChatGPT

If your only gap is the words, a general AI chat plus Buffer is the lowest-cost stack. You are still the designer and the publisher.

Buffer alternative FAQs

Is there a free Buffer alternative?

Metricool and Publer both have free plans with limits similar to Buffer's. Magic Marketer has a 14-day free trial with unlimited creations and no card, but publishing needs a paid plan. If "free" is the priority and you already have content, stay on Buffer's free plan - it is one of the best.

Does Magic Marketer schedule posts like Buffer?

Yes. Every post Magic Marketer creates goes into a calendar with best-time publishing across LinkedIn, Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, X, Threads, Pinterest, YouTube and Google Business. The difference is that the calendar arrives full.

Can I use Magic Marketer and Buffer together?

You can - export the assets Magic Marketer makes and queue them in Buffer - but there is no reason to. Magic Marketer publishes to the same channels, so most people cancel Buffer once the trial ends.

Why is Buffer so much cheaper?

Because it does less. Buffer is a queue for content you make elsewhere. Magic Marketer is the thing that makes the content, and then also the queue. Compare Magic Marketer to Buffer plus whatever you spend producing posts - your time, a VA, a designer - and the numbers change.
