What is a Social Media Thread?

A thread is one thought told across several posts in a row. Each post is a beat. The first one has to work on its own, or nobody opens the rest.

What it is

Several posts that keep one thought moving

A thread is not a long post cut at the character limit. It is the teaching order, or the argument, laid out so each post earns the next one.

X and Meta Threads both use this shape. The same source can come back as a thread for each, written to that channel's limit, not pasted from LinkedIn.

Use a thread when

  • The thought has a sequence people should follow
  • A workshop or outline already has the order
  • A single post would bury the point in paragraph six
  • You want people to reply to one beat, not the whole essay

Use another format when

  • The argument should be read as one post. That is long-form text
  • People should save a visual. That is a carousel or quote card
  • The delivery is the point. That is short-form video
  • One line is the whole post. That is a quote image

Per channel

Split on meaning, not on the character count

X gets posts that fit 280. Threads gets the longer 500. Both keep the same order. Nothing is truncated mid-sentence.

What good looks like

What a thread that gets finished looks like

1

The first post is the reason to keep going

If the opener only makes sense after post four, the thread dies in the feed.

2

One idea per post

A post that needs two thoughts is two posts. That is how people stay in the sequence.

3

Breaks land where the point ends

Cutting on the character count reads like a paragraph chopped up. Break on meaning.

4

Close it

A last post that recaps or asks a question. Threads that just stop lose the reply.

How it gets made

From the source to a thread people can follow

  1. 01Hand over the sourceA call, a workshop, a newsletter, a prompt. The order should already be in the material.
  2. 02Pick threadThe same source can also come back as a carousel or a long-form post. Each format is written separately.
  3. 03Check the breaksMove anything that needed the last post to make sense. Tighten the opener.
  4. 04Publish to X or ThreadsOr both. Limits are applied before you approve, so you can still edit any beat.

FAQs

Threads, answered

No. Each post is written as a beat. Cutting on the character count is how threads lose readers.

Make the thread from something you already said.

The teaching order, as posts people can follow. You edit any beat before it goes out.
