Buffer vs Hootsuite: which one, and is either the right question?

2 minutes to first post createdFree for 14 days, no card neededCancel anytime

Quick answer

Buffer if you are one person or a small team with content in hand: it is cheaper by a wide margin, cleaner, and does the scheduling job just as well. Hootsuite if you are a large team that needs an inbox across every channel, brand monitoring and multi-step approvals. If the calendar is empty because nobody made the posts, neither fixes that, and the third option below does.

Where Buffer wins

Price and simplicity. Buffer is free for three channels and $5 a month per channel after that, with no per-seat charge, so a colleague costs nothing extra on Team at $10 a channel. Most people learn it in ten minutes. For a solo operator or a two-person business that already has posts, there is no reason to pay twenty times more for Hootsuite.

Where Hootsuite wins

Everything that happens after the post goes out. One inbox for comments and messages across every channel, brand and keyword monitoring, message routing to the right person, and multi-step approvals with a paper trail on Advanced. If ten people touch your social accounts and a missed comment is a real cost, Hootsuite is built for you and Buffer is not.

What neither of them does

Make the posts. Both have an AI assistant that rewrites text you give it. Neither turns a client call, a workshop recording or a voice note into a week of carousels, videos and captions in your voice. Both assume the content exists and that your problem is distribution. For most small businesses the problem is the opposite: they know exactly what to say and never sit down to make it. (The queue is the easy part. Ask anyone with an empty one.)

That is what Magic Marketer is for. One source becomes finished posts in eight formats, checked against your brand guardrails and compliance presets, then scheduled and published to nine channels at the best time for each. On Autopilot a fresh batch arrives every week. It costs more than Buffer and less than Hootsuite for a team, and it is the only one of the three where the calendar arrives full.

If you have content and a small budget, buy Buffer. If you have a large team and need monitoring, buy Hootsuite. If the posts are the problem, this is the one.

Buffer vs Hootsuite FAQs

Is Buffer or Hootsuite better for a small business?

Buffer, almost always. It is free for three channels and $5 a month per channel after, and it schedules just as reliably. Hootsuite's $99 per user starting price buys monitoring and team features most small businesses never open.

Does Buffer have a social inbox like Hootsuite?

A limited one. Buffer's engagement features cover comments on some channels; Hootsuite's inbox covers comments and DMs across every connected network with routing and assignment.

Which is cheaper for a team of three?

Buffer Team at $10 per channel a month with unlimited team members: three channels is $30. Hootsuite Standard is $99 per user, so three people is $297 a month before add-ons.

Do either of them create content?

Both have an AI assistant that rewrites captions you paste in. Neither produces finished posts from a recording, transcript or link. Magic Marketer does, and then schedules them.
