Social Media Marketing Services for Small Businesses: Agency, Freelancer, VA, or Software

Quick answer: hire an agency when you need paid ads, SEO or someone in the room. Hire a freelancer when you want interviews and LinkedIn text. Hire a VA when you need a person for more than posts. Use software when the only gap is that the posts do not exist. (The "affordable package" is usually the one you rewrite.)

“Without Magic Marketer®, I probably wouldn’t be posting to social media at all.” Nic J. · Necto

The four ways owners buy this

These price bands are the ones we already publish on the comparison pages, checked September 2026. They are not a new survey. Magic Marketer® is A$ because that is what we charge.

OptionTypical costWhat you actually get
An agencyA$1,000 - A$6,000+/moPaid ads, SEO, a campaign, someone in the room
A freelancer or ghostwriter$1,500 - $3,500/moOne channel, usually LinkedIn, written after interviews
A VAA$800 - A$2,400/mo, or $5 - $15/hrAdmin, inbox, research, and posting once you brief them
SoftwareA$99/mo for up to 2 brands, 3+ by demoThe posts existing every week, in your voice, out to every channel

When the agency is the better buy

If you need someone to run paid, argue with the ad account, and sit in the quarterly, hire them. Software does not replace a media buyer or a strategist who has read the P&L.

An agency also wins on a launch: a new site, a new offer, a rebrand. That is a project with a start and an end. A weekly social queue is not that project, and paying project rates for a queue is how retainers quietly eat the year.

  • Paid ads, SEO or a campaign that needs a team
  • A launch or a rebrand, not an ongoing feed
  • You have the retainer and you will use the people in the room

When a freelancer or VA is the better buy

A ghostwriter is a retainer for interviews and LinkedIn text. That is the right buy if LinkedIn is the only channel that matters and you will show up for the interviews.

A VA is the right buy if the job is inbox, research, Canva and scheduling, and you will brief and check. Natalie Hewitt had an assistant overseas managing social and spent three hours editing two posts. The VA was not the problem. The brief was.

When software is the better buy

When the calendar is empty and the calls already happened. The content is in the recording. The service you are buying is turning that into posts you still approve.

That is Magic Marketer®. The plan is A$99 a month for up to 2 brands, with unlimited team members. For 3 or more brands, book a demo and we quote agency pricing. Free for 7 days. Cancel anytime before day 7 and you won't be charged. It does not run your ads. It does not sit in the room. If that is what you need, go back two headings.

How to decide this week

  • If you need paid, SEO or a launch team, get three agency quotes and stop reading tool pages
  • If LinkedIn text is the whole job and you will do the interviews, talk to a ghostwriter
  • If you need a person for admin as well as posts, hire the VA and keep a tight brief
  • If the only gap is the posts, start the 7-day free trial and approve a week from a call you already had
