Our testimonial posts got 28 times the views of a typical post on our account in September. Every testimonial we make follows the same five questions. Here they are, why they work, how to adapt them to your business, and how to turn one customer conversation into a week of content.
What happened at HQ in September?
September was a month of wins:
- We closed our first agency customers 🥳
- We made major infrastructure improvements so we can ship better quality code for new features
- We launched our first success story content
- Behind the laptop: our baby started walking (so fun!), I trained four times a week thanks to Fitstop Noarlunga, and date nights are back now we're exiting the newborn trenches
The success story win is the one I want to give you, because it works for any business, not just ours.
What did one testimonial actually do?
On 28 September we posted a testimonial from Steph Vaughan of Infinite Styling to our Magic Marketer accounts. Seven posts of the same story, across TikTok, Facebook, YouTube and Threads.
Nine days later, the typical testimonial post had 111 views. The typical post on our account that month had 4. That's 28 times the views, from the same accounts, in the same month.
Those aren't huge numbers, and that's the point. We're a small account, like most of the businesses reading this. You don't need a big following for this to work. You need content that gets more out of the following you already have.
| By the numbers | Figure |
|---|---|
| Median views per testimonial post (7 posts) | 111 |
| Median views per post, our other 74 September posts | 4 |
| Difference | 28x |
| Total views on the testimonial | 897 |
| Share of the account's September views | 15% of views from 8% of posts |

Same accounts, same month. The difference was the content: a real customer answering the same five questions.
What are the five questions?
Every testimonial we make answers the same five questions:
- What platforms? Where they were posting
- What content? What they were actually putting out
- How much time? What it was costing them each week
- How long does it take? How long it takes now, or how long until they saw a change
- Pain points? What was frustrating them before
That's it. Same five, every customer.
Why does it work?
- The reader sees themselves. Pain points come straight from the customer's mouth. When someone watching has the same problem, they stop scrolling, because it sounds like their own week.
- It answers the questions buyers are too busy to ask. Will it work for someone like me? How much effort is it? How long until I see something? The five questions handle all of it before anyone has to ask.
- It's specific. "They're great" is forgettable. Real time, real platforms and a real before-and-after is what makes a testimonial believable.
- It's repeatable. Same questions every time means every story is easy to record, easy to compare and easy to batch. You never have to reinvent the interview.
How do you adapt it to your business?
Keep the shape, swap the words for your world. The pattern is always: where were they, what were they doing, what was it costing them, how fast did it change, and what was the frustration.
| The question | A tradie or service business | A coach or consultant | A product business |
|---|---|---|---|
| Where? | Who did you use before us? | Where were you getting advice before? | Where were you buying before? |
| What? | What was the job and what did we do? | What did you come to me for? | What do you use it for? |
| How much? | What was it costing you in time, money or call-backs? | What was it costing your business to stay stuck? | What were you spending on alternatives? |
| How long? | How long did the job take, and how quickly could we start? | How long until you saw a change? | How long until you noticed a difference? |
| Pain points? | What was frustrating you before you called? | What was keeping you up at night? | What made you go looking for something else? |
How do you turn one conversation into a week of content?
This is where our newest launch comes in. This month we released Content Formats: you give Magic Marketer one thing you've already made, like a recording, a transcript or a link, and you get back six formats, each sized and written for where it's going.
A five-question testimonial is the perfect thing to feed it, because every answer is already its own post:
| Format | From the testimonial |
|---|---|
| Short-form video | The pain point answer, in the customer's own words |
| Carousel | All five questions, one per slide |
| Quote image | Their best line |
| Short-form text | The "how much time" answer as a before-and-after |
| Long-form text | The full story for LinkedIn or your blog |
| Thread | One question and answer per post |
One ten-minute conversation, six pieces of content. You can do this by hand, or let Content Formats do it in seconds.
What does this mean for your content?
One takeaway this month: interview one happy customer with the five questions, then turn that one conversation into a week of content.
Here's how to do it this week:
- Pick one happy customer
- Ask them the five questions on a ten-minute call and record it (with their permission)
- Keep their exact words
- Lead with the pain point. It's the one your next customer will recognise
- Turn the recording into six formats, by hand or with Content Formats
If you know you should be posting but don't want to do the thinking, that's exactly what Magic Marketer is for. See the five questions in action in the video testimonials from Steph, Natalie and Nic, or browse all our success stories.
